History of the Kafer War

1-May-2295 — Arcturus
Scientists at Station Arcture detect a ship of unknown origin in the system. They attempt to make contact, but are unsuccessful. The ship soon departs the system.

15-Aug-2297 — Arcturus
A Kafer task force enters the system and takes over Station Arcture, seizing the humans there as prisoners. Word does not get out about what happened, and nothing is known about what happened. Human forces begin contemplating a reconnaissance with military forces to determine what happened, and reinforcements are eventually sent to Eta Bootis, but can’t get anything done due to division in human leadership.

Battle of First Tithonus: A Kafer fleet enters the system from Arcturus and attacks the human fleet. The human fleet consists of a French squadron under Contre-Amiral Paul DuBoise and Kontr-Admiral Sergei Borodin. In the first engagement, two French cruisers (Suffren and DeGrasse) are destroyed.

5-Apr-2298 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Battle of First Tithonus: A Kafer battlecruiser engages the Ukrainian destroyers Sevastopol and Rostov,attempting to escort merchants out of harms way. Both Ukrainian ships are destroyed.

7-Apr-2298 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Battle of First Tithonus: DuBoise’s fleet is defeated, with the loss of the French battleship Ste. Jeanne d’Arc, the French frigates Aconit and Vauquelin, and the Ukrainian destroyer Kiev. Borodin takes command and withdraws to Hochbaden.

Siege of Aurore: Human forces begin landing on Aurore to relieve the colonial defenders, ending nearly three months of siege. An estimated 300,000 humans were killed during this time.

5-Jul-2298 — Laodemon, Eta Bootis
Battle of First Laodemon: A Kafer battleship that did not retreat with the rest of the fleet was destroyed by the German battlecruiser Bismarck.

1-Jan-2299 — Arcturus
Battle of First Arcturus: A newly arrived American cruiser division (Jefferson, Kostek) began an aggressive patrol around Arcturus. They immediately encountered and engaged a Kafer Alpha-class battleship. The battleship was heavily damaged and driven off, but the Americans lost Kostek.

2-Jul-2300 — Arcturus
Mission Arcturus: A human expedition arrives at Station Arcture to find out what happened to the humans there, and discover that the station was taken over by Kafers. The station is retaken by American Marines and French Naval Infantry in two days.

2-Jun-2301 — Sturmwelt, Hochbaden
Merchant ship Beau Soliel spots Kafer Task Force Zulu discharging around the gas giant Sturmwelt, but is unable to identify them. The ship files a report with Kolonie Zwei before continuing out system.

4-Jun-2301 — Kolonie Zwei, Hochbaden
Battle of First Hochbaden: The German frigate Magdeburg is lost with all hands while fighting off four Kafter Beta-class battlecruisers. Kafer ships begin attacks on orbital complexes.

5-Jun-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Combined Hunan Defense Fleet commander Contre-Amiral Jean-Paul Bertrand dispatches the Australian squadron (DD Bushranger, FF Kangaroo) to patrol Arcturus.

8-Jun-2301 — Arcturus
Shane’s Australian squadron arrives at Arcturus and begins its patrol.

8-Jun-2301 — Kolonie Zwei, Hochbaden
Battle of First Hochbaden: Kolonie Zwei effectively destroyed after four days of fighting. Kafers lose two Alpha-class battleships and three Epsilon-class cruisers to ad hoc defenses by the orbital habitats. An estimated 4.1 million German colonists are killed.

10-Jun-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Word of the Kafer attack at Hochbaden reaches Eta Bootis. The fleet at Aurore begins preparations to depart for Hochbaden. The fleet consists of the French squadron (BB Tallyrand, CG Bassompierre, FF Duperre, FF Kersaint), Ukrainian squadron (CG Konstantine, FF Kirovograd, FF Azov), German squadron (BC Bismarck, CG Hamburg, FF Sachsen, FF Thuringen) and the American squadron (CG Jefferson, FF Temptress, FF Spitfire).

The relief fleet departs for Hochbaden.

Shane’s Australian squadron spots Kafer Task Force X-ray and withdraws towards Eta Bootis.

13-Jun-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Shane’s Australian squadron arrives at Eta Bootis. He dispatches a fast courier to Hochbaden to recall Bertrand, and races in-system to prepare a defense of Aurore.

15-Jun-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
With no sign of a Kafer task force yet, Commodore Shane orders the arming of merchant vessels with surplus military weaponry as an ad hoc colonial defense squadron.

16-Jun-2301 — Sturmwelt, Hochbaden
Battle of Second Hochbaden: The human relief fleet arrives from Eta Bootis and engages Kafer pickets around Sturmwelt. German squadron commander Kommodore Wilhelm Lutke and Ukrainian squadron commander Kontr-Admiral Sergei Borodin advised Bertrand to keep the fleet together and advance deeper into the system. Bertrand ignores their advice and allows the squadrons to split up in pursuit of the Kafer forces remaining in system.

18-Jun-2301 — Hochbaden
Battle of Second Hochbaden: A Kafer counter-attack surprises Bertrand and results in the destruction of Tallyrand, with a French and an American frigate taking serious damage. Borodin takes command.

18-Jun-2301 — Dunkelheim, DM+36 2393
Humans detect the arrival of Kafer Task Force Zulu on the fringes of the system. German frigates Brandenburg and Leipzig under Kapitan von Mannheim withdraw without making contact. Governor Schmidt says, “We are a small world with few military resources, but we’ll make our enemies pay dearly for our planet.”

Battle of Second Hochbaden: Kafer Task Force X-ray arrives in system. Borodin withdraws the human fleet towards Eta Bootis.

19-Jun-2301 — Dunkelheim, DM+36 2393
Invasion of Dunkelheim: Kafer ships enter orbit and begin landing troops. There is near complete anarchy on the ground, as the colonial administration and all paramilitary forces have disappeared (withdrawing to a secret base in the hotback that was prepared for a potential renewal of hostilities with France).

22-Jun-2301 — Hesperus, Eta Bootis
Battle of Hesperus: Ships of Kafer Task Force Yankee begin to enter the system. Bushranger and Kangaroo, along with three armed merchant ships, destroy an Improved Alpha-class battleship that was ahead of the main body.

23-Jun-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Battle of Third Tithonus: Borodin’s forces arrive at Tithonus at roughly the same time as a group of six Kafer battleships of Task Force X-ray and drives them away. All Kafer forces withdraw from Eta Bootis.

27-Jun-2301 — Dunkelheim, DM+36 2393
All human settlements are completely occupied by Kafer forces.

29-Jun-2301 — Laodemon, Eta Bootis
Battle of Second Laodemon: Borodin anticipated the Kafer force at Hochbaden would turn back towards Eta Bootis, and set an ambush. Two French ships acted as bait to lead the Kafer force into the rings of Laodemon, where pre-deployed human missiles were waiting. Five Kafer ships were destroyed, including a Delta-class battleship.

30-Jun-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Borodin organizes his missile cruisers (Konstantine, Bassompierre, Hamburg, Jefferson) into a raiding squadron for mobile operations, leaving the other ships as a defense squadron lead by Lutke in Bismarck.

3-Jul-2301 — Arcturus
Borodin reaches Arcturus and begins a sweep of the system.

Battle of Second Arcturus: Borodin raider squadron begins engaging isolated Kafer ships in system.

Battle of First Vogelheim: Three Kafer ships raid Alderhorst, turned away by the international peackeeping squadron led by American Captain John Gsell.

Battle of Second Arcturus: Borodin’s raider squadron departs Arcturus after defeating a handful of Kafer ships.

10-Jul-2301 — Aurore, Eta Bootis
Battle of Fourth Tithonus: Lutke’s squadron drives off a Kafer battle ship. The American frigate Spitfire is sent in pursuit.

The Kafer battleship turns and attempts to engage Spitfire, but Spitfire escapes.

The merchant ship L’Oriente departs system to run the Kafer blockade and go up arm.

Ground fighting intensifies, and Borodin orders naval troops to the surface to support ground troops.

First word that Aurore has not fallen ot the Kafers reaches Earth, and orders for the first relief expedition are dispatched to Vogelheim.

Borodin’s cruiser squadron begins a probing raid.

A Kafer fleet begins to arrive in system.

Battle of First Beta Comae Berenices: A human fleet consisting of ships from France, Great Britain, and Germany under the command of Vice-Amiral Ferdiand Rochemont engage a Kafer force number nearly twice as many ships in a running battle throughout the system.

25-Aug-2301 — Beta Comae Berenices
Battle of First Beta Comae Berenices: Rochemont’s forces are victorious, with the Kafer forces withdrawing in considerable disorder. The victory fills the human forces with confidence.

26-Aug-2301 — Beta Comae Berenices
Rochemont withdraws the French squadron to Vogelheim on orders to mount a relief expedition to Eta Bootis.

31-Aug-2301 — Hochbaden
Borodin’s cruiser squadron finishes its probing raid and withdraws towards Eta Bootis.

Rochemont’s squadron arrives from Beta Comae Berenices to begin preparing for the First Relief Expedition.

Battle of Second Beta Comae Berenices: A reorganized Kafer fleet appears in system, consisting of 2 Delta-class, 3 Alpha-class, and 4 Improved Alpha-class battleships, 12 Beta-class battlecruisers, and at least 20 Epsilon-class cruisers. They face the British squadron of 3 destroyers (Defiance, Indefatigable, Renown) and 4 frigates (Achates, Ulysses, Andromeda, Medea) under Commodore Sir Kevin Connors, and the German squadron of 1 cruiser (Admiral Hipper) and 2 destroyers (Seydlitz, Lutzow) under Kommodore Kurt Waldermann (who is in overall command). Waldermann is too aggressive, and both human flagships are destroyed within minutes. The surviving senior officer, Captain Campbell, withdraws towards DM+35 2436 on the advice of the sole surviving German captain. Total human losses are a German cruiser, a German destroyer, a British destroyer, and a British frigate.

9-Sep-2301 — Nous Voila, Beta Comae Berenices
Siege of Nous Voila: Kafers do not land ground forces, preferring sporadic orbital bombardments, using a nearby moon as a resupply depot. By the time the siege is lifted, approximately 9 million of the colony’s 12 million inhabitants are killed.

Battle of First Kimanjano: The Japanese squadron is defeated and withdraws towards its base at Joi (61 Ursae Majoris) after sustaining heavy damage. A dispute arises about whether or not the Japanese withdrew too early or if the Germans were late in aiding the Japanese squadron.

Invasion of Kimanjano: Human ground forces on Kimanjano had been heavily reinforced prior to the Kafer invasion, including an Americna Marine Regimental Combat Team, elements of a French Infantry division, an Azanian mechanized brigade, and a company of elite Texas Rifles. The Kafers landed in force and begain their first major opposed planetary invasion.

Battle of First Kimanjano: The German squadron withdraws after the loss of the frigate Hannover. French Foreign Legion fighters continue to fly missions whenever possible from their secret base in the asteroid belt.

Battle of Fifth Tithonus: Borodin lets the Kafer squadron from Hochbaden establish orbital superiority to catch them in the gravity well. They are defeated by the combined human forces.

Invasion of Kimanjano: Kafer forces defeat the last major human ground forces on the planet and root out the last of the French Foreign Legion fighters bases in the system. Kafers occupy all human settlements.

7-Feb-2302 — Beta Canum IV, Beta Canum Venaticorum
Battle of First Beta Canum Venaticorum: A small Kafer squadron entered the system and engaged the small German screening force, destroying the frigate Kassel. Fearing grave ecological damage from an attack on the beanstalk as the Kafers advanced in-system, Beanstalk Project Director Gustave Lafontained cut loose the beanstalk near the planetary surface. Kafer vessels conducted orbital bombardment of groundside facilities. The Kafer squadron then withdrew.

Battle of Third Vogelheim: Rochemont defeats a small but well handled Kafer force. The German frigate Schleswig is destroyed, as are three Kafer cruisers. One heavy Kafer battleship is heavily damaged.

Battle of First Beta Canum Venaticorum: A larger Kafer force entered system and moved in towards Beta Canum Venaticorum. Outmatched, the German squadron withdraws.

19-Feb-2302 — Beta Canum IV, Beta Canum Venaticorum
Invasion of Beta Canum IV: The Kafers bomard obvious military facilities and land ground troops. Kafers begin to set up a colonial occupation administration.

Invasion of Crater: A Kafer fleet arrives in system and destroys the orbital terminal Kafer forces begin landing.

Battle of Joi: Vice Amiral Rochemont’s fleet appears with the Joi squadrons that previously withdrew, shaprly defeating the Kafers in close orbit. Human relief troops begin landing.

Battle of Second Beta Canum Venaticorum: Rochemont’s fleet arrives and defeats the Kafer garrison forces in the system, forcing them to withdraw.

4-Apr-2302 — Beta Canum IV, Beta Canum Venaticorum
First Relief of Beta Canum IV: French and American ground forces from Rochemont’s fleet begin landing to root out the Kafer occupiers.

Combined Kafer fleet departs for Queen Alice’s Star for the final push on Earth. Their departure is noted by human scouts, who report to the Human Reserve Fleet.

12-Jul-2302 — Beowulf, Queen Alice’s Star
Battle of Beowulf: The Human Reserve Fleet of 4 battleships, 2 carriers, 1 battlecruiser, 14 cruisers, 20 destroyers, and 27 frigates are attacked by a Kafer force consisting of 14 battleships and 10 cruisers. At the height of the battle, the battleship USS Columbia engaged in a one-on-one duel with the Kafer flagship, distracting the Kafer commander while the ships battered each other into rubble. British fighters finished off the Kafer ship, and the Kafer organization collapsed. Barely one-third of the Kafer fleet survived to retreat.

A single Kafer fighter is intercepted in the outer reaches of the system, the last gasp of the raiding group that pushed past Queen Alice’s Star during the battle there.

Battle of Third Beta Comae Berenices: With Rochemont’s forces covering DM+35 2436 and Vogelheim, and coordination with Borodin for a strong squadron to be placed in Hochbaden, the Human Reserve Fleet advances on Beta Comae Berenices, scattering the Kafer forces there. Most retreat towards DM+36 2393 (Dunkelheim), thoug a few do head for DM+35 2436 and Vogelheim. Human forces begin to land in relief of the planet.

16-Sep-2302 — Nous Voila, Beta Comae Berenices
Relief of Nous Voila: Human ground troops from the Reserve Fleet begin to land to retake the world from the Kafers.

1-Oct-2302 — Beta Comae Berenices
With a route secured to Aurore and the Kafers bottled up at DM+36 2393, the humans take an operational pause to finish the majority of ground operations in their rear areas and move up reinforcements.

15-Nov-2302 — Vogelheim
Task Force 29 is created to retake Dunkelheim. It consists of an Americn squadron (1 cruiser and 2 destroyer escorts) and a German squadron (2 destroyers and 1 frigate) guarding two American assault support ships (LSS) and a cargo ship squadron (1 Canadian, 2 American fast cargo ships). On board the LSS’s is the American 7th Marine Interface Brigade

Battle of Second Dunkelheim: Human forces begin a series of raids to systematically destroy the remaining Kafer ships in the system, using overwhelming force in every raid, and retrating quickly before the Kafers are able to organize their defense.

Battle of Second Dunkelheim: Human forces eliminate the last Kafer ship in system and prepare for a full ground invasion.
